The Life of a Freelance Writer is Never Boring

First, I was an invisible girlfriend.👧
Then, I became an invisible boyfriend.👲
And soon thereafter, a Russian bride…💍

Though the pay was dismal,
And the assignments oft grueling,
I wasn’t upset.
I was ecstatic!

This wasn’t very long ago. At that point, I held a Master’s degree and could’ve easily had a 6-figure job.

Instead, I was excited over dismal pay that could barely pay for a gallon of gas in Seattle; however, it was the thought of ‘endless possibilities’ and ‘financial freedom’ that thrilled me.

Going from 0 to 1 is the hardest; If I can convince 1 client that I’m amazing, what’s to stop me from persuading 2, 3, 10, or 100?

After I managed to pen several fairly convincing articles about my (fictional) forays into everything from being a gay man (with the name of Sylvia) to insider knowledge about what jewelry one should buy based on their horoscope sign, an editor deemed me the 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 freelancer she’s ever hired.

Since that day, I’ve worked with over 500 clients who have added value to my credibility.

Today, I’m no longer a freelance writer except with very select clients I’ve been working with for many years. My prices have increased tenfold since that humble day I first started, and I no longer feel obligated to accept assignments that cause me to question my integrity.

It’s important to know your worth.

Yet you also have to start somewhere.

If I had let ego or a sense of entitlement block me from taking those small steps,
I would have failed before I began.
